Ben & Jerry's Selects American Red Cross as Honorary Charity for "Free Cone Day"

Ben & Jerry’s has selected the American Red Cross-Dallas Area Chapter as its honorary charity for “Free Cone Day”.

On Tuesday April 12, 2011 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., the 33nd annual Free Cone Day will be held. Red Cross volunteers will be on hand to scoop ice cream and collect donations. Three Ben & Jerry’s locations will be participating in this event and accepting donations for the American Red Cross:

• McKinney: 2851 Craig Drive
• Plano: 1501 Preston Road
• Highland Village: 4061 Barton Creek
  

Free Cone Day started in 1979 on the one year anniversary of the business. Co-founders Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield first scooped free ice cream all day in order to thank the community for supporting them throughout their first year. Free Cone Day has now become an annual tradition at participating Ben & Jerry’s locations across the nation.

Over one million free cones are given away each year at this event. Not only does Ben & Jerry’s give away free ice cream on this day, but the shop has a tendency to celebrate with celebrity guests, music and fun entertainment throughout the day.

On the heels of cataclysmic disasters in Japan, met with overwhelming community support, the American Red Cross must be prepared to respond on the home-front too. Every scoop will count to help a family after a home fire, tornado or any other spring weather event.
