Have a Safe & Happy Labor Day Weekend, from the American Red Cross

by Sydney Holt, volunteer contributor

Ah Labor Day... The holiday for the working people. This much-anticipated break usually signifies the official end of summer and outdoor barbecues, but as you relax and unwind be sure to follow these general safety tips to ensure your holiday is a safe and enjoyable one.

  • Lakes. oceans. pools. Whether it's the beach or boating, always swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. Have young children or inexperienced swimmers wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets around water, but do not rely on life jackets alone.
  • Always keep grills a safe distance from any dwelling, tree branches, or anything else that could catch fire.
  • BYOE... Emergency supply kit, of course! Red Cross advises travelers to carry an emergency supply kit in the trunk with minimum supplies including a gallon of water per person, per day; nonperishable and easy-to-prepare food; a flashlight, radio and extra batteries; and a first aid kit. Other items to bring include a seven-day supply of medications for those traveling, a multi-purpose tool, sanitation and personal hygiene items, copies of personal documents; family and emergency contact information; a cell phone with charger; an emergency blanket; map, and extra cash.
  • Ought to remember sunscreen! In recent years, excessive heat has caused more deaths than all other weather events, including floods. Be sure to reapply sunscreen often, have a designated shade source and drink plenty of water.
  • Red Cross has your back. To learn how to prevent and respond to emergencies, contact your local office for information on home pool safety, water safety and first aid and CPR/AED courses

Download the American Red Cross free First Aid App for smartphones and tablets provides users expert advice on what to do in case of an emergency. It is available on Apple iTunes or Google Play and at redcross.org/mobileapps.
