Be Flash Flood Ready

In the wake of the flash flooding that took the lives of several Arkansas residents last week, we’re all reminded that our world could be turned upside down in a matter of minutes. Our hearts go out to the families affected by these floods.

A flood of this caliber is unusual for that area and residents reacted to the disaster as best they could. North Texas is not immune to the devastating effects of flash flooding either, and there is no better time than the present for us to become prepared should a strong storm bring flood waters to our area.

Redcross.org is a one-stop-shop for all things related to Preparedness including a whole page devoted to Flood Preparedness. Check out the Flood Safety Checklist which highlights how to prepare for a flood, how to react during a flood and how to recover from a flood.

An important thing to remember during a flood is that you’ll likely be without electricity. So battery operated equipment is essential: battery operated or hand-cranked radios and flashlights. If you find yourself stuck in your home after a flood, you’ll want a supply of food and water. The Red Cross recommends having a three-day supply.

Find these and many more helpful recommendations at www.redcross.org.
